What IS a meme? According to scientist and author Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene (1976), “meme” is short for the Greek word “mimeme,” which means “imitated thing.”
Memes have been taking over the internet since the early 2000’s. Mashable ran a stellar infographic called What’s in a Meme that gives a run-down of 6 types of memes and some backstory.
By now, you have almost certainly seen the same memes shared over and over again. We’ve all seen “Success Kid” in various iterations:
Memes have become so popular that you can now make them from your phone or tablet with the help of a very simple app.
I’m here to tell you how to make your own meme using the MAKE A MEME app (it’s free and the easiest and most efficient app I found):
First, find an image that speaks to you – an image where you are perhaps inspired to add an ironic, humorous, cynical or witty tone in two lines.
STEP 1: Upload your picture.
STEP 2: Type in top text. Type in bottom text.
STEP 3: Share and admire your finished meme!
I call mine Pumpkin Patch Baby. (aka my adorable nephew)
Here’s another one:
Lollipop Girl (my daughter)
Now it’s your turn to make a meme!
